Manchester Phoenix U-18s got their pre-season preparations underway on Bank Holiday Monday with a very creditable 5-5 draw, away to the Newcastle Vipers.
The newly promoted squad iced with just nine outskaters and two netminders against a full three-line Vipers team at the Metro FM Arena.
In a cat and mouse encounter, Phoenix twice took the lead, first through Oliver Bayne and then courtesy of new recruit and former Blackburn defenceman, Max Drakeley. On both occasions the Vipers cancelled out the deficit before taking a 3–2 lead themselves.
Tom Revesz, making his debut for Manchester, put Phoenix back on level terms, before two goals from Newcastle put the home side comfortably ahead. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Phoenix worked hard late in the third period to salvage a result. A fine shot from Joe Greaves put the visitors within reach of the Tynesiders and a late Ben Brown strike was enough to earn Phoenix a very pleasing and morale-boosting 5–5 draw.
Phoenix officials wish to extend their thanks to the Vipers’ organisation for the challenge invitation. We look forward to welcoming them to Altrincham for the U-18s’ first league match of the season on Saturday September 6th. Everyone will be welcome to support a full Phoenix squad as they open their inaugural A league campaign.
Entry is free with face off at 4.35pm.
